Collegium Ritualis Ecossai
Sunday, September 19, 2010, 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Peter Reardon • Stephen Penn

Brethren of the Collegium Ritulus Ecossai, Our first gathering fast approaches. On Sunday, September 19th at 8:30 am, we will have the first discussion of the semester, on the fourth degree: Secret Master. We will precede one degree per month, six per semester, concluding with the Thirty-Second degree, Master of the Royal Secret. The Collegium will meet in the Austin Scottish Rite Auditorium, the third Sunday of every month Promptly at 8:30 am. The altar and stage will be set just as it is for the dramatic presentation of the degrees during our reunions. The cordon, sash, apron and jewel will be displayed and the degree music will be playing. This elaborate staging is to involve all the senses while investigating and contemplating the ritual. Then a presentation will be made on the background of the degree and its evolutionary development. The historical and mythological degree settings will also be explored.

Then, the members of the Collegium will participate in a table reading of the actual esoteric degree material, as authorized by the Supreme Council.

Following the reading, we will have a roundtable discussion of the elements, themes, allegories, myths, and symbols of the degree. The previous versions of the ritual will be introduced for comparison. The secret work of the degree and its variations will also be explored, including the passwords, passgrips, grips, words and signs of the degree.

We will conclude with a presentation followed by a discussion, of the place each degree holds in the progression, of the Scottish Rite system and our practical application of its lessons.

Come and join the many knowledgeable brethren of the Collegium Ritualis Ecossai, who are willing to share their insights and participate in the cross-pollination of ideas. This is a rare opportunity to contribute your knowledge and perspective while advancing your understanding of the rich tapestry of symbolic, philosophical, political, and religious truths contained in the remarkable degrees of the Rite. The exploration of the actual degree materials in this setting is unique to our valley.

The best way to prepare for the Collegium Ritualis Ecossai is to read in advance, the appropriate chapters in “A Bridge to Light”, “Scottish Rite Ritual Monitor and Guide”,  “Morals and Dogma” and the other materials handed out upon sign up. The reading material and our discussions are meant to amplify and help assimilate the initiatory experience, that each of us might  become a worthy holder of the title and honor each degree.
